This Is Going To Hurt

Adam Kay used to be a junior doctor in the NHS. When he could, he wrote a diary. This book contains many or all of those diary entries. And they are very, very readable. They’re also very, very funny. (The items that individuals manage to insert into themselves and then need a doctor to remove…) But there’s more beyond the humour – which most of the reviews have stressed –  and if you buy the book expecting a 21st century Doctor in the House-style romp, you’ll be disappointed. AK’s descriptions of the stress, the hours and the sheer blistering hard work involved in being a junior doctor in an NHS hospital will probably have most people relishing every second of every dull, can’t-wait-for-5-o’clock job they ever had.

It’s one of the best books I’ve read this year.
