The Kenneth Williams Diaries

Several people believe, and have publicly stated, that KW’s death was due to an accidental overdose of painkillers. After reading all 800 pages of these edited diaries, all I can say is that if his death WAS an accident, then it was an accident that saved him the trouble of having to end his life deliberately. What you find over and over in this book are tart, insightful, observations by KW about himself; acidic comments about colleagues – and appreciations for kindness from a few close friends; but above all an overwhelming, inescapable sadness and despair for his very existence.

It reads like nothing so much as a 40-year suicide note.
